Automatic Gate Not Working? Try This Before You Call

An automatic gate always fails at the worst moment — you're leaving for work and the car is trapped, or you're home late and locked out. Before you call anyone, there's a short list worth running through.

First: find the manual release

Every automatic gate has a manual release — usually a key barrel on the motor housing — that disengages the motor so you can move the gate by hand. Find it now, before you need it, and make sure you know where the key is.

Releasing the motor gets your car in or out and lets you secure a gate that's stuck open. It turns an emergency into an inconvenience while a repair is booked. If you take one thing from this article, it's this.

The usual suspects

**No power / dead battery.** If nothing happens at all, check whether mains power to the gate is on (trip the safety switch?) and bear in mind the backup battery has a limited life. A dead backup battery is the single most common fault, especially after a storm-season outage.

**Gate opens but won't close.** This is almost always a safety photocell — the sensor that stops the gate closing on a car or person has been knocked out of alignment or failed, so the gate refuses to close as a safety default. Check the little lenses each side of the driveway for a knock, cobwebs or dirt. Don't disable the sensor — it's there for a reason.

**Motor hums but the gate doesn't move.** Often a stripped drive gear, a jammed track (check for stones and debris on a tracked slider) or an obstruction. Sometimes the gate has come off its track.

**Remote does nothing.** Try the keypad or a second remote before assuming the gate is at fault — a flat remote battery or a failed remote is cheap and easy to rule out.

**Intermittent faults.** A gate that works sometimes, especially in the wet, often has water ingress or corrosion in the control box — common near the water on the Coast. This one usually needs a professional before it fails outright.

What you can and can't fix yourself

Clearing debris from a track, replacing a remote battery, and cleaning a dirty photocell lens are all fair game. Anything involving the control board, the wiring, force settings or a motor replacement is a job for someone licensed and experienced — both for safety and because a mis-set force limit can turn a gate into a hazard.

When to call

If it's a power, board, motor or drive fault, or the gate is opening or closing with too much force, book a repair. Note what the gate does and doesn't do before you call — it speeds up the diagnosis. And in the meantime, use that manual release.
