Automatic Sliding Gates on the Gold Coast

Why sliding, and when it is the only option

A swing gate fights gravity on every cycle. Opening uphill loads the motor; closing downhill loads the brake. And if the ground rises through the arc, the gate scrapes — which no amount of motor will fix.

A sliding gate travels parallel to the fence line, so driveway gradient is largely irrelevant to its motion. That is why sliding wins on three site types in particular:

- **Sloped driveways**, which is most of the Tamborine and hinterland acreage - **Short driveways**, where a swing gate would open into the road or into a parked car - **Tight estate blocks** through Robina and Helensvale, where there simply is not room to swing

The trade-off is side clearance. A sliding gate needs somewhere to go — a run alongside the driveway roughly equal to the gate width, plus room for the motor. If that run is occupied by a garden bed or a retaining wall, that is the constraint to solve before choosing hardware.

Sizing the motor properly

This is where cheap installations fail, and the failure is predictable.

A motor run at the edge of its rated capacity on every cycle overheats internally, and the windings eventually break down. It is not a dramatic failure — the gate just gets slower, then starts stopping mid-travel, then does not start at all.

Real published figures give a sense of the envelope. A common residential sliding operator is rated to a **500 kg maximum gate mass**, with a **17 kgf rated push force**, travelling at **18 to 22 metres per minute**, and a **maximum of 150 operations per day**. Heavier or busier than that and you are into a larger unit — industrial operators handling 1,000 kg exist and cost accordingly.

What matters for your quote is that the motor is chosen against **your gate's actual weight and your actual daily cycle count**, not against the price list. A gate at a short-stay rental cycling forty times a day is a different specification from one at a house that leaves twice.

Building it for the Gold Coast

The Gold Coast is not a generic coastal location. Council's own figures: **135 constructed lakes and more than 400 kilometres of canals** — the largest constructed canal network in the southern hemisphere.

That matters because the published corrosivity categories treat surf coast and sheltered salt water very differently. Under AS 4312, the surf shore within 200 metres sits at **C5**, while the immediate vicinity of calm salt water such as a canal or harbour foreshore sits at **C4**, easing to **C3** from 50 metres inland. So a Broadbeach Waters canal frontage sits in a materially less aggressive macro-environment than a beachfront lot at the same distance from water.

Here is the counter-intuitive part, and three separate coating authorities say the same thing: **sheltered surfaces that never get rain-washed can corrode faster than exposed ones**. Wind-blown salt settles and stays. The Galvanizers Association puts it plainly — corrosion rates in sheltered locations can exceed those on the exposed faces of the same article.

Practically, that means:

- **Stainless fixings matter.** Industry guidance is that **grade 316 should be selected as a minimum within five kilometres of a surf coast**, and that 304 is not recommended there. - **Powder coat quality and washdown frequency** do more work than the alloy number. Coating manufacturers specify cleaning every **six months in a coastal category and every three months in a marine one**. - **Sheltered hardware — hinges, tracks, the inside of the motor housing — needs the attention**, precisely because rain never rinses it.

One thing worth knowing before you buy: **gate motor manufacturers exclude corrosion from warranty.** One major brand's terms void cover for damage from "atmospheric conditions (including lightning), corrosion of metal parts, insect infestation, power surges". So specification and maintenance are your only protection — not the warranty.

Power, and what happens in a blackout

Most residential sliding operators run a **12 volt DC motor** with an internal battery. Mains charges the battery; the battery drives the gate. That is why they keep working through an outage rather than dying with the power.

Published figures for a common unit: **44 operations** on a 7 Ah battery in half-day standby, or **35 operations** over a full day. Note the manufacturer's own caveat — that figure is based on a four metre gate and **excludes infrared safety beams**, which draw standby current. Fit beams and you get fewer.

Every gate also has a **key-operated manual release** so you can push it open by hand. We show you where it is and how to use it at handover, because the moment you need it is not the moment to go looking for the manual.

Safety

We fit photoelectric safety beams as standard, along with force limitation and auto-reverse where the operator supports it.

We will be straight about the regulatory position rather than overstating it: **we could not verify that compliance with a specific automatic gate standard is legally mandatory for residential gates in Australia.** What we can say is that these features are industry standard, strongly recommended, and what we would want on our own driveway. Anyone telling you a particular standard is legally required should be asked to cite it.

On the electrical side, the position is clear-cut: a 240 volt gate motor connection is electrical work under the *Electrical Safety Act 2002*, and must be carried out by a licensed electrician working for a business holding an electrical contractor licence. You are entitled to a **Certificate of Testing and Compliance** showing that licence number.
