Power at the gate — and when to go solar

Under the *Electrical Safety Act 2002*, equipment operated above **extra low voltage** — that is, above 50 volts AC or 120 volts ripple-free DC — is electrical equipment, and connecting supply wiring to it is electrical work requiring a licensed electrician. The business doing it needs an **electrical contractor licence**.

Some useful nuance:

- **Plugging a gate power supply into an existing outlet is not electrical work.** Installing a new outlet to plug it into is. - **Mounting the motor is not electrical work.** Making the connection is. - A genuinely low-voltage motor on a plug-pack or solar sits outside that definition — but a hardwired transformer does not, because its primary side works above extra low voltage.

After any mains work you are entitled to a **Certificate of Testing and Compliance** stating the electrical contractor licence number. Ask for it.
