Automatic Gate Repairs on the Gold Coast

Before you call anyone: if your gate opens fine but will not close, that is usually a safety beam doing its job, not a broken motor. Sometimes it is not even a fault.

"It opens but it will not close"

This is the most common call we get, and it has the most reassuring explanation.

Manufacturer troubleshooting guides list the **safety beams among the first things to check** for exactly this symptom. One operator's fault-finder is explicit: if the closing beam input is activated, **the gate will not close once open**. That is the beam doing precisely what it is designed to do — refusing to close on something it thinks is in the way.

The usual causes, in the order worth checking:

1. **Something is actually in the beam path** — a bin, a parked car, an overgrown shrub, a stray branch 2. **Dirty lenses.** Salt film, dust, cobwebs, or a spider that has set up in front of the sender 3. **Misalignment.** A knock from a car, a post that has shifted, or a bracket that has worked loose 4. **Insects.** Ants nesting inside the housing is a manufacturer-acknowledged failure mode, not a folk theory — one manufacturer's own troubleshooting tells you to check for ant and dirt ingress on the sensor, and both major brands exclude insect damage from warranty

A wipe of both lenses with a clean damp cloth genuinely fixes a good proportion of these. Worth trying before you pay anyone.

Or it may not be a fault at all

Here is something almost nobody tells you: on at least one common operator, **if the auto-close feature has not been enabled, the gate will remain open indefinitely by design**. It closes only when the closing beam is interrupted or the trigger is pressed.

So a gate that "stays open" may simply be configured to. Worth ruling out before assuming something has broken.

Gate not moving at all

The first thing we check is the **battery**, because these are DC motors running off one.

Published figures for a common operator: **below 13.5 volts, the motor will not operate at all.** The gate is not broken; it is flat. Causes include a failed charger, a bad terminal or lead, or simply a battery at end of life — and note manufacturers warrant batteries for as little as **six months** against 24 months for the product itself, because they are treated as a consumable.

Other causes worth knowing:

- **Blown main fuse** - **A holiday lockout input activated**, which does exactly what it sounds like - **Beam inputs activated**, which can prevent movement in one direction

Gate stops halfway, or reverses

Usually mechanical, and usually findable.

One manufacturer's false-collision-detection procedure is effectively a wear checklist, and it is a good one — with the gate in manual mode, check for a badly running gate or physical obstruction anywhere along its travel, rack not pressing down onto the pinion, bad rack joints, seized or badly running wheels, top guide rollers restricting the gate, dirt on the rail, physical rail damage, and the wheel catching the side of the pinion.

The gate reports this itself: the controller counts collisions and stops. What it is telling you is that something is physically resisting, and the answer is almost never "a bigger motor".

Gate closes then reopens

Same family of causes as "will not close", plus one more worth knowing about: **limit settings drift over time**, so the gate stops recognising where its closed position is. One manufacturer's system uses an origin magnet and a rotary encoder, and its fault list covers a moved origin marker, a harness problem or debris on the sensor.

Notably, that fault can be reported while **the gate keeps operating** — it beeps but keeps working. A gate that has started beeping is warning you about something, and it is worth acting on rather than tuning out.

Remotes and keypads

- **Battery** in the remote — the obvious one, and often right - **Memory full.** Receivers have a finite transmitter capacity. On one brand it is 27 transmitters; on another, 500 button codes. "My new remote will not program" is sometimes a full memory rather than a fault - **Interference.** Manufacturers acknowledge this — one names baby monitors and other radio transmitters explicitly, and excludes radio interference from warranty - **Antenna position.** Sitting behind a metal gate or fence reduces range - **Heat.** One manufacturer specifically warns against leaving transmitters on a dashboard in the sun, which on the Gold Coast is a real failure mode
