Automating a Pedestrian Gate on the Gold Coast: Locks, Keypads and Motors

Why the small gate matters

Most of the attention goes to the driveway gate, but on many Gold Coast homes the pedestrian gate beside it gets far more use. Couriers, visitors, kids walking home from school and whoever mows the lawn all come through it. If the driveway gate is automated and the front gate still relies on a padlock or a latch anyone can lift, the security of the whole frontage is only as good as that small gate.

Automating a pedestrian gate does not always mean fitting a motor. Usually it means controlling the lock, so the gate can be released remotely and stays secure when it shuts. This guide explains the options and what we look at when we quote one.

Option one: an electric strike

An electric strike replaces the keeper that the latch sits in. When it receives a signal it releases, and the leaf can be pushed open by hand. Once the gate swings shut, the latch re-engages. It is a tidy, low-power solution that suits a gate that already closes reliably on its own.

Strikes come in fail-secure and fail-safe versions. Fail-secure stays locked if power is lost, which is what most homeowners want on a street-facing gate. Fail-safe releases when power drops, which can suit some shared or commercial entries. The right choice depends on how the gate is used and whether there is another way in during a blackout.

Option two: a magnetic lock

A magnetic lock, often called a maglock, holds the gate shut with an electromagnet and a steel plate. It has no moving latch parts, which makes it forgiving on gates that do not close perfectly square. The trade-off is that it needs constant power to stay locked, so battery backup is worth considering, particularly through storm season when outages are more likely.

Maglocks need a solid frame to mount to. On a lightweight aluminium slat gate we often add a reinforcing bracket so the plate seats properly and the gate cannot be flexed open.

Option three: a motorised pedestrian gate

Where nobody wants to push the gate at all, a small swing motor can open and close it. This suits wheelchair or pram access, elderly residents, or homes where a level, wide path leads to the front door. A motorised pedestrian gate needs the same thinking as a driveway gate: obstruction sensing, correctly set force, and a manual release so it can be opened by hand if the motor fails.

Most pedestrian gates are light, so the motor itself is modest. The bigger questions are the strength of the hinge post, the closing speed and whether the gate swings across a path people walk along.

Closers and hinges still matter

An electric lock is only useful if the gate actually shuts. A hydraulic or spring gate closer brings the leaf back after each use so the strike or maglock can engage. Without one, the gate gets left ajar and the automation achieves nothing. Salt air around Main Beach, Southport and the canal estates is hard on cheap closers and hinges, so stainless or marine-grade hardware is worth the small extra cost.

How the gate gets opened

Once the lock is electric, almost any access device can release it. A weatherproof keypad on the street side is the most popular choice and lets you give a code to a cleaner or a tradie without handing over a key. A push-button exit on the inside means nobody needs a code to leave. If you already have an intercom at the driveway, it can often be extended to release the pedestrian gate too, so you can see and speak to a visitor before letting them in. Our Intercom & Access Control work covers all of these, and one keypad or intercom can control both gates.

A spare button on your existing driveway remotes is another option, so a single fob opens either gate depending on which button you press.

Power and cabling

Electric locks run on low voltage, but they still need a power supply and cabling run neatly to the gate. If the driveway gate already has power, the pedestrian gate can usually draw from the same supply. Cable crossing a hinge needs a proper flexible loop or a concealed transfer so it does not chafe every time the gate moves. Any new 240V circuit or power point must be installed by a licensed electrician.

Pool gates are a separate case

If the gate is part of a pool barrier, different rules apply. Queensland pool gates must be self-closing and self-latching, and adding an electric lock or a motor must not stop the gate from doing that. Before changing a gate that is part of a pool fence, talk to a licensed pool safety inspector, and expect us to ask about it when we visit.

Pairing it with the driveway gate

Pedestrian gate automation is often done at the same time as a new driveway gate or an automation retrofit, because the cabling, power and access control can be planned together. If you are already looking at Automatic Sliding Gate Installation or Gate Automation Retrofits, mention the side gate at the quote stage. We work on homes from Helensvale and Coomera down through Nerang and Robina, plus acreage entries up on Tamborine.

Getting a quote

Tell us about the gate, which side the latch is on and how you would like it to open. We will recommend a lock, closer and access device that suit it, and confirm everything on a site visit before anything is ordered.
